From the 9th of April to the 13th of April I did work experience for Guinness. On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday I was working in the Guinness Storehouse. On Tuesday and Friday I was working in Ogilvy. On Monday I started out with a private tour of the Storehouse. This was very cool because it was my first time in the storehouse and I got to see everything there was to see. After the tour of the storehouse I was given an on site VIP tour of the breweries by the Master Brewer. This included the hop houses and the area which they roast the barley. After lunch I sat down with one of the advertising ladies for Guinness and talked to her about safe drinking and how it can be promoted.
On Tuesday I went in to Ogilvy which is Guinness' press release partners. There I found out all about what PR is and how it helps different companies. After they explained the benefits of PR to certain companies we talked about how they do it. I wouldn't have thought PR is as much about building relationships with newspaper writers and all around media as it is. It comes down to a lot of people doing a favour to get your message out to people as soon as possible. Later in the day we discussed upcoming photoshoots that the company is having and some of them sounded very interesting.
On Wednesday I was back in the Guinness Storehouse. I was working in the gift shop for the day. When I first got in I was given a quick walk through of what goes on and what I would be doing for the day. In the morning my job was to just keep stacking shelves and tidy up the store after the customers. It was amazing how busy it actually gets. After lunch I was working on engraving. This was really cool to learn how to do. We would look at the messages people would want on there pint glasses type it in to the computer, line it up on the machine and it would engrave it. This was a really fun but tiring day.
On Thursday my day again was split into two parts. The first half consisted of one on one talks with the head of licensing and head of social media in Diageo. These were really cool to see what needs to be done just to print some t-shirts and sell them around the world. After lunch I was in the archives. Some of the stuff they have is really cool. They have for example bottles and cans from the first few years of production and the lease that was signed for St. James Gate. This was very fascinating.
On Friday I was back in Ogilvy. I sat down with the video team and they showed me how to properly edit a video. They then taught me how to make gif. This was really interesting. We made one with some of the Dublin GAA players. It turned out really well. In the afternoon I sat down with the sports team. I helped them prepare for a shoot they were doing on Monday with Keith Earls. They showed me where the media would be and where the photos will be taken. This was certainly something I would like to do when I’m older.
